Silly Celebrations - Book Review

Everybody knows how to celebrate the traditional holidays, but what can you do to celebrate National Egg Month or National Peanut Month or National Smile Week?

Silly celebrations: activities for the strangest holidays you’ve never heard of by Denice Skrepcinski, Melissa Stock and Lois Lyles

This book highlights twelve unusual holidays so you can have a celebration every month.

Suggestions to help your kids enjoy this book:
• Buy craft supplies on sale- stock up on paint, paper and glue
• Plan for a safe place for kids to make a mess
• Teach your kids that it’s ok to make a mess
• Don’t help or manage too much- let them do it themselves
• Make some stuff with your kids

This book is written for ages 7 and up and has lots of directions written directly to the kids so they will be safe, ask for help when needed and clean up after themselves.

For each month there is a holiday with history or explanation of that day and projects that go along with the celebration and even suggests some other books to read for further knowledge and explanations.

The holidays to be celebrated are:
• National Kazoo Day
• Gold Rush Days
• National Peanut Days
• Pet Owners’ Independence Day
• National Egg Month
• National Hollerin’ Contest
• UFO Days
• National Smile Week
• Willow Trading Post Potato Festival
• Month of the Dinosaur
• Anniversary of the Discovery of King Tut’s Tomb.

Just to give you some ideas I will share the chapter for National Peanut Month. In this month you can learn about where peanuts are mostly grown and a little about Dr. George Washington Carver and how he helped boost the peanut to become one of the world’s leading food crops.

A few mini facts about peanuts – there is about fifty thousand peanut farms in Georgia, Alabama, Texas, North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. Projects in this chapter include growing your own peanut plant with all the details and illustrations to show you just what to do. You can make a wildlife tracker to see the tracks of wild animals. Make some Peanut Butter Clay Dough or some homemade peanut butter- Yum! And...if you like chocolate and peanut butter you will want to make peanut clusters.

A BIG, BOLD, WARNING lets kids know right up front that this is a recipe they need to ask an adult for help as it uses the stove.

This is a unique activity book that fun activities and information about actual holidays, celebrations, and regional festivals. Take the opportunity to peruse the book for ideas of what to do when and plan some fun activities for those special days.
