Autoimmune protocol

Many individuals who eat a paleo or caveman�s diet report relief from their allergy symptoms. However, some may need to follow a more restrictive version, called the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), to obtain the relief they are seeking.

The paleo diet is an anti-inflammatory diet where you are encouraged to eat like our Stone Age ancestors. The diet excludes many foods that tend to contribute to inflammation and allergies. The focus is on eating a healthy balance of veggies, lean protein and fats, that are free of pesticides, antibiotics and hormones.

The Paleo Autoimmune Protocol offers more healing for those who do not achieve the results they would like on the regular paleo diet. The protocol is basically an elimination diet built around the full paleo diet.

For 30 days, eliminate the following foods:

Eggs
Nightshade vegetables
Nuts and seeds
Dairy

Continue to eliminate permanently:

Processed foods
Soy
Grains
Legumes
Refined sugars and oils
Soy


It is widely believed that certain foods tend to overburden the immune system and make it harder for our bodies to deal with environmental allergens. In contrast, eating anti-inflammatory foods will have the opposite effect and help control inflammation that leads to allergic responses.

Why eliminate these additional foods?

Nightshades contain alkaloid compounds which often increase the symptoms of people with autoimmune disease. Nightshades include: tomatoes, tomatillos, potatoes, bell peppers, chili peppers, pimentos, eggplant, goji berries, ashwagandha (ayurvedic herb), and red pepper spices (chili flakes and powder, paprika, cayenne, curry). Read labels because many products contain these ingredients. Also beware of terms like �spices� and �natural flavors� which often contain these ingredients.

Nuts and seeds: many individuals with inflammatory or autoimmune diseases are sensitive or allergic to nuts. Seeds are generally non-reactive foods but are difficult to digest. Foods that bog down the digestive tract should be avoided.

Eggs: It�s the white that often contributes to problems for those with autoimmune problems. Many times the yolk can be eaten.

Dairy: Often, milk sensitivity or allergy is a problem for those with autoimmune disease.
