Gilbert's Beef and Cheddar Craft Sausage Review

I was sampling my way through my local Costco, looking for products to review when I tasted a Beef and Cheddar Craft Sausage. Wow! When you are longing for a sausage that will remind you of the greatest hot dogs of your youth, try Gilbert's Craft Sausages. Even better than a hot dog, this firm sausage reminds me of a cross between a hot dog and a little smoky type sausage. The texture is tight and firm, but the spicing reminds me of hot dogs.

In addition to the delicious taste, the Gilbert's Craft Sausages have no MSG, nitrites or nitrates. They are uncured, smoked and individually wrapped. Easily microwaved in their wrappers, unwrapped and cooked in water or on the grill, these sausages are a versatile meat that is tasty at any time. In a bun or a crusty roll, the sausages make great sandwiches.

I bought the Beef and Cheddar smoked sausage at Costco. It contains Beef Sirloin, Beef, Water, Cheddar Cheese (Cultured Milk, Salt, Enzymes, Vegetable Color-Annatto) with 2% or less of the following: Seasoning Blend (Natural Spices, Paprika, Natural Flavors), Sea Salt, Sugar, Cherry Powder and Evaporated Cane Syrup, Cultured Celery Juice Powder, Sodium Phosphate, in a Beef Collagen Casing.

Each sausage contains 220 calories, 19 grams of fat, 2 grams of carbohydrate, and 11 grams of protein. Surprisingly, the sausages contain significant amounts of vitamins and minerals, too. One sausage link has 12% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C, 6% of the RDA of calcium, and 6% of the RDA of iron.

Gilbert's website (http://gilbertssausages.com/) does not list the Beef & Cheddar, so it is probably made for Costco. They do list what looks like a little brother to the Beef & Cheddar. The Froman shares most of the same ingredients and spicing. It is slightly lower in calories and sodium, since no cheddar is included. The website carries flavors that Costco does not. There is a Beef & Bleu with blue cheese. Beer Brats are made with gluten free beer. Pork is the main ingredient in the Chipotle, Mozzarella & Lime Sausage. It is described on the website as, "A spicy, smoked sausage made with pork, chipotle peppers, real mozzarella and a hint of lime." It sounds delightful!

Here are serving ideas for the Beef and Cheddar Sausage:

Dog It: Get brat buns from your local bakery. This sausage deserves a great bun. Add catsup, French's yellow mustard, or your favorite mustard, and some Claussen Sweet Pickle Relish. Do you have other condiments that you must have on a hot dog? Pile them on, add some side dishes, and bite into that wonderful sausage.

Cheesy Dog: Start with a fresh brat bun on a microwavable plate. Spread the bun and put your favorite cheese on the top cut part of the bun. Microwave it until the cheese is just starting to melt. Don't over-microwave, or you will make the bun tough. Add your condiments to the bottom part of the bun, and place the sausage in the prepared bun. Bite into it and close your eyes in ecstasy!

Uptown Dog: Get a crusty Italian or French roll to fit the sausage. Slice the roll and spread Inglehoffer's Stone Ground Mustard on the bottom of the roll. Put the dog into the bun and cover it with tangy coleslaw. Heavenly!

If the Gilbert's Beef & Cheddar is the standard by which smoked sausages are judged, I would give this tasty sausage a 10! Let us know how you use these delightful sausages. Just post in the BellaOnline Sandwiches Forum. We'll be waiting to hear from you.
