I don't know where the idea of New Year's resolutions came from, nor do I care to have that revealed to me. If I had a dollar for every New Year's resolution that I've seen made and broken, the vacation of my dreams would be a real possibility. Maybe that's why I am not a big fan of the hyped up "NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION." That being said, there's something alluring about a new year. It stretches before us, shiny and fresh, filled with possibilities. However, with Attention Deficit Disorder, if you don't do some planning and take the time to put strategies in place, the New Year will give you the same types of experiences that the old one did. Set aside some time for yourself, pull up a cup of tea, and reflect on the past year. Use your reflections to plan for the new one.
As you think about the past year, what were your triumphs? Were they in a particular area of your life? How were they set apart from the rest of your life? Take a moment to write these insights down. These were times when your positive symptoms of ADD outpaced the negative symptoms. Your energy and creativity won the day! Relive the steps that you took to make this possible. How did you get past the inattention and distraction that Attention Deficit Disorder can bring to your life?
In contrast to those triumphant moments, I am sure you had times when distraction was a constant companion. What were the conditions in your life like when that happened? How did you break out of the cycle? Write these reflections down, too. It's important to know what feelings, incidents, and activities trigger the negative symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder.
After ruminating on the past year, think about what you would like to do about that shiny New Year that is stretching into the future. Do you have projects or experiences that you want to accomplish? Outline how you could reach these goals. I love to outline on the computer, because like many people with ADD/ADHD handwriting is a slow and painful process for me. If you take pleasure in putting pen to paper, do what you enjoy. If you appreciate a nice journal, treat yourself! Some folks love a scheduling calendar and find that it keeps them nicely on track with their plans. Use your reflections to figure out what you need to attain those projects and experiences, and get the items for yourself. Having the necessary tools to put your plans into action is essential.

Even when you want it, change is never easy. Sometimes making changes feels like there are two steps forward and one step back. We all know this! It's also understood that growth comes through change, and the journey through life is a learning opportunity that is important in its own right. Make your journey count! Look into the New Year using the lens of your past experiences. What do you see?
