I am a Dan Jenkins fan as have enjoyed his books about golf and other funny writings in Golf Digest. He has such a great sense of humor and can make any situation a fun read. Dan has now published another book about his life called His Ownself. This is another great book as he reminisces about his life and his childhood through his experiences until present day
This was a very enlightening book as I often wondered about his life. From the many books that included some wild times surrounding many sports stories I believed his life would be like his books. That was a wrong idea as from this book his real life was wild with many sports stories to cover but his home life was traditional. He was married a short time before he discovered June a school friend was his soul mate. Their life included three children starting in Fort Worth, Texas working for the local newspaper to New York working for Sports Illustrated.
His life in Fort Worth was interesting to me as having family living there and now living in Texas myself. I remembering visiting many of the places he talked about and even played the golf course he called the Goat Hills. I remember laughing so hard reading his book Dead Solid Perfect as he talked a lot about this golf course and the games they play there. I was sure a lot of what he wrote was true and I became sure when Dan wrote about it in this book. He would go to work early at the newspaper, attended a couple classes at TCU, huried to the golf course to meet his friends for wild games of golf.
Dan led a very interesting life and he talks a lot about the many people he met during all his travels to many different sporting events. He talks about his family and taking June with him on many of these trips. Dan left Sports Illustrated after many years of a misunderstanding with the publisher and end up at Golf Digest and Playboy, he still writes for these magazines.
This book give you the idea of all the work involved with being a sports writer and meeting deadlines to get his story back to the publisher as he prides himself of never missing a deadline. Any reader will enjoy the information on what it takes to get a book made into a movie. Three of his books were made into movies and he talks about working with the actors and actresses. Dan’s book “His Ownself” is a good read and you will discover that being a sports reporter is not an easy life but Dan lives it well.
