The Piano

Ada, a woman who has been mute since childhood, is shipped to New Zealand in the mid 1800’s with her young daughter, Flora, and her most prized possession, a piano, in an arranged marriage with land baron, Alisdair Stewart. But Ada is soon torn between mixed feelings for her husband, who is eager for their marriage to work, and his plantation worker, George Baines, who Alisdair has sold the piano to. Although George initially asks for Ada to give him piano lesson, he soon makes a bargain with Ada that she can earn her piano back, one key at a time---but at what price? Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “The Piano”.

• CAUTION: May Contain Spoilers! Flora runs to Alisdair and gives him the piano key that was meant for George Baines. During the scene, there is a fence post behind them covered with a coat and black hat. But in the far view, when he opens the package and eventually leaves, the coat is still there but the hat is missing. It’s back a few moments later when one of the plantation workers takes the hat off of the fence post and puts it on his head.

• CAUTION: May Contain Spoilers! Ada, Baines and Flora are leaving on the canoe while the other men are rowing. The sea waters are noticeably choppy. When Baines tells them to “Undo the ropes”, Ada puts her left hand in the water and the water is calm. It’s choppy again in the next view of the canoe when it begins to tilt.

• CAUTION: May Contain Spoilers! When the men begin to toss the piano overboard, the overhead view of them shows the top of the piano with its legs up is getting ready to hit the water. The scene cuts to an underwater view as the piano hits and its upright with the legs pointed down.

“The Piano” (1993) stars Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, Kerry Walker and Anna Paquin. It runs 121 minutes and is rated R for moments of extremely graphic sexuality.
