Sliced or shredded, cheese is toothsome in a crispy, crunchy grilled cheese sandwich. You don't have to stop with a single cheese! Mix it up. Cooking for a crowd? Dig out the griddle and grill several sandwiches at once. Lay out a variety of breads, cheeses, and meats, then let folks construct their own grilled cheese combinations. Have a crock pot full of soup on hand. Don't forget the salad bowl!
Bread-can be slices or buns. Sliced breads that make delicious grilled cheese include sourdough, white potato bread, rye, pumpernickel, nutty grain, sprouted grain, and honey whole wheat. Buns and rolls can be sliced and grilled "inside-out" to give a crispy texture to the grilled cheese. Cocktail buns, Kaiser Rolls, onion rolls, wheat rolls, pumpernickel rolls, pretzel rolls, hamburger buns, and hot dog buns are all good choices for a grilled cheese.
Cheese-Use the best cheese that you can afford. However, even the cheapest cheese is elevated when you grill it in a sandwich. Try provolone, mozzarella, mixed Italian cheeses, Mexican cheeses, Colby, Muenster, cheddar, American, pepperjack, and Swiss.
Meat-Tasty meats can be layered into the sandwich. Choose deli meats for a uniform sandwich. Salami, pepperoni, ham, roast beef, crispy bacon, chicken, and turkey are all good choices.
Select one or more of these soups and salads to pair with the grilled cheese sandwiches.
Soups-These warm bowls of goodness pair well with grilled cheese. Serve your grilled cheese with Tomato, Vegetable, Spicy Corn Chowder, or Herb Noodle soup. Asparagus and Corn soup is also a light and lovely meal with a grilled cheese.
Salads-When you add a salad to a grilled cheese, you layer on color, crunch, and fresh taste. Any of these luscious salads would taste great with a grilled cheese. Low-Carb Spinach, Marinated Vegetables, Broccoli, Coleslaw, Italian Cucumber, or Chopped Salad would fill the bill.
You can put a new twist on an old grilled cheese by using your imagination. Grill mozzarella and provolone on garlic bread with a bit of salami or pepperoni layered into the sandwich. Heat your favorite spaghetti sauce for dipping. Then, serve those dipped sandwiches with a chopped salad or marinated vegetable salad. Finish your meal with fruit and cookies. It's easy, quick, and nutritious!
