Add Image to Motion Project

Now that we have added our Bokeh animation as the background for our MotionR project, we can start working on the first scene of the project. This six-seconds long introduction, called a open, will immediately tell the audience what the product trailer is about.

As the product is wedding stationary, we will set the scene with a graphic of a bouquet of roses. The first scene will consist of the .psd bouquet graphic that will fade in at the beginning of the video for 30 frames, stay on the screen for five seconds and then fade out for 30 frames. We will also add our first title with the text "For Your Wedding", which will fade in and out during the same six seconds.

We can import our .psd Photoshop image into Motion in three ways. The default is to import the .psd image with all layers merged. The second option is to import the image without merging the layers. The third option is to import only one selected layer from the .psd image. In our example, we will use the default option because our image has only one layer, which is the bouquet graphic.

  1. Let's make some room to work in the Layers pane. Close the disclosure triangle for the BG layer to condense the layers into the one group layer.

When we import our image, Motion will automatically create a new Group layer and place the image on a new layer within the new group, giving the layer the name of the imported image.

  2. Click File - Import and select the .psd image. Click the Import button.

I like to organize my Motion project into sections that I call "scenes" and place the design elements for each scene within the same group. Let’s rename the new group layer to "Scene1" because it will contain all the elements for the first section or scene of the product trailer.

  3. Double-click the Group layer and rename it "Scene1".

  4. By default, our image has been placed in the horizontal and vertical center of the Canvas. We can drag the image downward, to reposition it to the bottom edge of the Canvas. Use the guide lines that appear as you drag to keep the image at the horizontal center of the Canvas.

As you can see by default, the image is also added as a new layer in the Timeline, with the same name as the imported image. Also by default the layer extends the entire length of the Timeline or duration of the project. We will only have this image on the Canvas for six seconds.

  5. Drag the right edge of the image’s Timeline layer to the left until it ends at the six second position, which is 00:00:06:00 on the Timeline.
