It is always a thrill for me to acquire a new tatting book. This new book from Korea is the first Korean language tatting book I have seen. It is a large trade publication size 7.5" x 9.75" (19 x 25 cm), paperback with 192 pages. There is full color on every page, even the diagrams.

The first part of the book (93 pages) is jammed with tutorials on every tatting technique needed for the basic tatting kit. Page 10 illustrates 20 basic techniques with a color photo of the finished effect. Each photo directs you to the corresponding page in the tutorial section also. And, the publisher thoughtfully provided an English - Korean tatting abbreviations chart, too. The common abbreviation is given followed by the English name and then the Korean character, i.e., R = ring = Korean character. This is a great help when studying the patterns.

The second half of the book (100 pages) has over 20 tatting projects. The tatted lace is displayed in use. My favorite is this doily pattern with the traditional hen and chicks edging which is used to make a unique clock.

The tutorial pages are vital to any book of instructions for tatting and these pages do not disappoint. The photos and diagrams are large and clear. Even a novice tatter will be able to learn from these directions. As a bonus, a set of 16 motifs are featured in the last few pages. An explanation of how to make mobile with them is included. The last pattern shows how to take one motif and make 3-dimensional balls. They are also shown on the cover. Too cute!


Don't hesitate to get this book because of the language. The diagrams and photos make it easy to follow.
