Modern Baby Crochet Book Review

“Modern Baby Crochet: Patterns for Decorating, Playing, and Snuggling” opens with an Introduction by the author, Stacey Trock. "I focused on the hub of baby life: the nursery. I wanted to create a book of baby designs that would suit any modern nursery, whimsical and adorable, both with a chic twist.” She’s achieved this goal with 21 contemporary designs for nursery décor from blankets and pillows to toys and mobiles.

As with any good crochet pattern book, the first few sections cover the basics of crochet, stitches and techniques used in the patterns, yarns, and tools needed to complete the projects. The patterns are written using US terms and there are no crochet charts, so you must be able to read the patterns to complete the projects.

The patterns are organized by color themes: Bold and Bright, Pretty In Pastel, and Naturally Neutral. There are 21 patterns total with each section containing between 5 to 7 patterns each. Most of the patterns in the book are at the beginner to easy skill level, with only 5 of the patterns being intermediate or above in skill level. Projects include blankets, toys, pillows, floor mats and rugs, mobiles, a pouf, a bunting, and a set of bookends. The patterns are easy to understand and contain precise instructions for assembling and finishing the projects, joining and stuffing toys, and lining or padding rugs and mats.

The last part of the book covers the final steps to finishing the projects and caring for the completed items, such as blocking instructions and laundering soiled items. Children are intended to use the items, after all.

Stacey Trock has authored two other popular crochet books: "Cuddly Crochet: Adorable Toys, Hats, and More" and "Crocheted Softies: 18 Adorable Animals from around the World".
