Creative Backgrounds for Short Stories

Itís interesting how memories can be triggered while just cleaning the garage. Forgotten photos are treasure found holding forgotten memories. In an instant, the sounds, the words, scent of the air, or taste come rushing back returning you to a moment in time.

When writing short stories, these memories can help you create a rich background and texture to showcase your characters. Create a palate with a descriptive memory of the scene. For example, your character is sitting atop a huge boulder on the Snohomish River, watching a torrent of water cascading over lower rocks that create a waterfall turning into rolling rapids. The feel of walking on mossy ground, the rich smell of the earth, the crispness of the air can put your reader into a location youíve re-created; and they ďstepĒ out of their daily world and into your story. Sounds like a great place to pitch a tent and tell a story doesnít it?

With just a few sentences, create a background that you found inspiring. You can post the background you write to the Short Stories Forum. Itís fun to share ideas and receive feedback from your writing peers. Donít worry about it being good enough for others to read, this is about creative memory to provide a unique backdrop for your story. Then you can consider how you want to develop characters and a story to fit the scenario. We can discuss our creations and discover what type of character(s) the writer is considering. Within the setting created, what will happen? Using the memory above, the character(s) could discover a wandering bear on a walk in the forest. Perhaps a lost child or pet is found. What if Mount St. Helenís happened to blow during the camping trip? Itís all up to you, the writer, to decide what is going to happen.

For all who are inspired to write, just post your background sentences. If you wish to participate but have time constraints, just post your thoughts on what you read. If you wish to continue the story, we can share ideas on further development of your story. It will be interesting and fun to read the scenes of other members. This is just for the joy of writing and sharing with others. There is only one rule Ė postings must be ĎGí rated. BellaOnline.com makes every effort to put forth a positive, non-offensive reading/writing experience for every member.

This is an opportunity to share your world - the one that only exists through your eyes. Stories can serve to open the author's world up and invite people to walk in. It would be fascinating to visit Stonehenge, Mayan ruins, Madagascar, even Easter Island.

Happy writing!
