The Phantom Of The Opera (1925)

A mysterious and dreaded phantom lurks the halls of the Opera of Paris where he has threatened the lead singer Carlotta, who is starring as Marguerite in “Faust”, in order to make his muse, the little known Christine Daae, not only the star of the Paris Opera but his companion as well. All that’s required of Christine is to give up her love for Raoul and devote herself entirely to him. But when she discovers his true secret, will he allow her to live? Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching the 1925 horror classic “The Phantom of the Opera”.

∙ Near the beginning of the movie, the first scene inside the opera house shows the audience with the orchestra seated in front, near the stage. The rear view of the conductor shows him facing the orchestra, with his arms swinging. The scene cuts to an overhead view and the conductor is facing the stage with his back to the orchestra and his arms are not moving.

∙ The dancers run to ask Joseph Buquet about his encounter with the phantom. In the front view of him as he turns to look at them, Joseph takes his right hand out of the mannequin head that he’s working on and lifts it up towards them. In the close-up of him, he does the same thing again.

∙ When Christine first meets the phantom face to face, he takes her left hand to lead her away. As she’s being led to the steps, her right hand is elevated but empty. It cuts to the two walking down the stairs and she’s now dragging a veil/part of her dress with her right hand.

∙ When the phantom tells Christine that he loves her, she holds her left arm out, shaking her left hand at him as if saying “no”. It cuts to a close-up of the two of them and her left arm is crossed over her chest and her left hand is next to her right arm.

“The Phantom of the Opera” (1925) stars Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry and Gibson Gowland. It runs 93 minutes and is Unrated.
