The Patriot (2000)

It’s the dawn of the Revolutionary War and the peaceful life that Benjamin Martin and his family have been living comes to an abrupt end. Colonel Tavington and his forces not only capture Benjamin’s oldest son, Gabriel, with intents on hanging him for treason, but also murder one of his other sons, Thomas and destroy the family’s farm in the process. Benjamin soon makes it his mission to bring down the British, led by Cornwallis, with his band of rogue militants, as well as to face off with Tavington. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching 2000’s “The Patriot”.

∙ After the meeting where South Carolina decides to vote a levy, Gabriel decides to join the Continental Army. While he’s waiting at the table to enlist, he is at first turned away from Benjamin in one view but in another, Gabriel is turned towards him. Benjamin says the line “You intend to enlist without my permission” and Gabriel turns towards him again.

∙ Gabriel is writing a letter home while sitting in the snow. Gabriel can be heard talking about his friend Peter Cuppin who he says was killed in Elizabethtown. But, a close view of the letter that Gabriel is writing shows that it says Peter was killed in Monmouth.

∙ Benjamin and his family help the wounded soldiers of both armies after the battle that is near their home. The blood on Benjamin’s shirt sleeves (mainly the right one) changes throughout the scene. This is especially noticeable when the British commander approaches and thanks him for “the care of his majesties soldiers”.

∙ The only soldier to survive Benjamin’s attack is being treated in a medical tent when Tavington comes in to question him. When Tavington first walks into the tent, his right collar is tucked under a strap. But, throughout the scene, the right collar alternates from being under the coat strap to being over it!

∙ Benjamin meets with General Cornwallis for a parlay to release his captured friends. There is a white feather quill that is sitting on Cornwallis’ desk that changes position throughout the scene even though no one has touched it. (This is especially noticeable when Cornwallis mentions “hostile intensions”.)

“The Patriot” (2000) stars Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Tom Wilkinson, Chris Cooper, Joely Richardson, Tcheky Karyo, Rene Auberjonois, Donal Logue, Leon Rippy and Adam Baldwin. It runs 165 minutes and is rated R for strong war violence.
