One of the Motion 5 features that you will used to create many effects is the masking technique. In this tutorial, we will take a look at a simple masking technique for a logo reveal for a craft business.

This project has only a few design elements. There is a background image of a typical crafter’s room. To make it “everybody’s” craft room, we will blur the background image, leaving just enough clarity to tell what it is. To add a little interest, we will move the background slowly, as if it was a video of a real craft room.

The important design element is the business name. I am using my real business name dCipollo Designs. Because the first two letters in the name are in the Hobo Std font and the rest of the name is in Cooper Std, this is a perfect element for the masking technique. We will first fade in the dC and then bring in the ipollo Designs, moving in from the left and behind the dC. In order to create the effect that the rest of the name is appearing from behind the dC, we will use a mask to hide the text until we move it away from the mask and into view.

Because this logo reveal will be used as the beginning for the product trailers for each new product released over the next year, we will create just the 10 seconds logo intro and save it in the .motn format, which can then be imported as the first part of each new product trailer.

1. Start a new Motion^R 5 document with the Preset set to Broadcast HD 1080, Frame Rate to NTSC 29.97 fps and 10 seconds Duration.
   
   
2. In the Layers pane, rename the Project layer to “LogoReveal_2014”. Rename the Group layer to “BG” for background.
   
   
3. With the BG layer selected, click File - Import to import the background image. Motion will resize the image to fit the screen. But our image needs to be larger, full sized, so that we can move it downward slowly during the logo reveal.
   
   
4. With the image selected, go to Inspector - Properties. Use the Scale slider to resize the image back to 100%.
   
   Now we can add the two Keyframes to the Timeline that will move the background image. Place the background image in the position for the start of the animation.
   
   
5. With the Playhead at the start of the Timeline, click the Record icon to start recording the position of the background image for the first Keyframe (Frame 1).
   
   
6. Move the Playhead to the end of the Timeline. Use the controls in the center of the image to position the image where you wish it to be at the end of the animation. Click the Record button to stop recording. You should see two Keyframes, small red dots, under the BG layer on the Timeline.
   
   

Now we will add the text to the scene and create the masking technique.
