Keep The Peaceful Easy Feeling of Vacation

What mom doesn’t love vacation time? Our responsibilities seem less - even if they’re not - and there is an ease to everything when on holiday. We love making less meals, not worrying about a clean house, and no pressure of time and expectations.

Once arriving home from a relaxing vacation, it seems impossible to hold on to that peaceful, vacation energy. If only we could pay our bills, load the dishwasher, and do the laundry on island time. While we might not be able to relinquish all the responsibilities that seemed to cease while on vacation, there are some steps moms can take to keep that peaceful, easy feeling of vacation every day.

Attitude
Live each day as though it were your last. A carpe diem quote most of us have heard before. Yet, most people are unable to relinquish enough of the pressures of the everyday grind in order to live in the moment. Unfortunately, it often takes a tragedy to give ourselves permission to focus on the important things. Take steps to make your life motto one of appreciating the moment and giving gratitude for what you have. Don’t wait for a tragedy. Let the joy of vacation follow you home.

Environment
Part of what makes vacation time so tranquil is the beautiful views that commonly come along with vacation destinations. Learn to appreciate the views in your hometown, if you have them. Notice the mountains, the blooming flowers, or the tree-lined streets. Print pictures of vacation memories and put them up in your laundry room, by your kitchen sink, or directly on your vacuum cleaner. Glance at these pictures often, take a deep breath of fresh air, and allow peace to enter.

Action
Live as though you were still on vacation - as much as you can. You may have to start making beds and cleaning the house once you’re home, but view your city as though you were a tourist. Visit new places. Create household routines and rhythms that bring ease. When I returned from a family vacation, I continued the tradition I started while away of making ginger tea each morning and drinking it throughout the day in a special, reusable cup I bought. Buckle down and focus on those mundane tasks you have to do. Get them out of the way early, creating more time for your enjoyment and pleasure. It can be done.

Why shouldn’t the vacation lifestyle follow you home? Your attitude, surroundings, and the way you live your life will help you feel “on vacation” all the time.
