Sewing for charity is something that is easy to do and your small effort is very much appreciated by those on the receiving end. I always think that with making things for charity, everyone gets a big BANG for your BUCK!
I’m currently sewing clothing protectors or bibs for a nursing home that is in dire need of these items. They are terribly expensive to buy, but the charity group I belong to, Sunshine Linus Inc, has worked out how to rescue and recycle resources that would otherwise be dumped.
Most nursing homes use many hundreds of towels each day, and they are laundered pretty heavily to make them sanitised and germ free. Unfortunately, these towels don’t stand up to the hot water industrial washing machines and in no time at all become thin and not able to be used to dry patients.
This is where Sunshine Linus comes in. We have asked for these towels, and cut them up into terrific clothing protectors. We can get two ordinary sized bibs from each towel, or one clothing protector per towel when making a large bib.
We bind them with bias binding – using polyester fabrics that are donated – the sort that you’d never put into a quilt – but are strong and sturdy enough to protect the edges of the bibs. We cut the bias on the cross as this allows for going around corners.
We use a simple clip system – usually one clip for the small bibs and two for the large bibs.
These clothing protectors are very much appreciated by not only the patients, but the staff of these nursing homes. It’s always preferable to have patients in clean unsoiled clothing and these towel bibs provide exactly that.
