Add Static Text To Craft Product Trailer Template

In this tutorial, we will continue to work on the craft product trailer template. We are using MotionR to create the template with placeholders, call drop zones, for the customizable graphics and other design elements in the template.

So far, we have created two drop zones for the background image and the intro video clip. Before we begin adding the other drop zones which will be animated to move across the screen, we need to add the stationary design element, because we need to be aware of its placement when we build the animations for the other drop zones. This stationary design element is the copyright text that will be visible at the bottom left of the screen throughout the template.

The two design decisions that we need to make are the type of font and color of the text. Because the text will be very small, we will use Helvetica as it is a simple font and easy for the video viewer to read. As for the color, we can use a light gray because it will be easy to see in front of any background image that we may use for our trailer.

Of course, if we decide it would be better to change the font or color for a certain trailer, this can be easily done in Motion. When you begin a new project from a Motion template, you are not working on the original template but a copy of the template. The original template that we are creating in these tutorials will remain intact.

Because we want the copyright to be visible no matter what other design elements are on the screen, it must to placed at the top of the hierarchy in the Layers pane. As we mention during the planning stage, our top layer group is the Closing group and we will be placing our copyright text inside this group.

Open your working .motn file and let’s get started.

  1. Click the lock icon at the right edge of the Intro and BG layer to lock this layer.

  2. Select the productTemplate layer and click the plus sign at the bottom of the Layers pane to add a new group. Noticed that Motion automatically placed the a new layer at the top of the Timeline and extended the new layer across the entire Timeline. Rename this group layer to "Closing".

  3. With the Playhead at the beginning of the Timeline, click the screen with the Text tool. You will get new layer named Text inside the Closing group.

  4. Type the name of the company.

  5. In the Text - Format tab of the Inspector, set the Font to Helvetica and the Size to 20.

  6. With the text still selected, switch to the Text - Style tab and set the color of the text to your choice.

  7. Move your cursor to the front of the name so that we can add a copyright symbol.

  8. Click Edit - Special Characters and choose the copyright symbol. Add a space after the symbol.

  9. Drag the text into position at the bottom left corner.

Save your work.
