Red Dust (1932)

Dennis Carson is the owner of a rubber plantation in the rugged countryside of Indochina. He gets more than he bargained for when the vivacious and opinionated Vantine, who’s trying to outrun some trouble she’s gotten into, shows up. His trouble doubles when surveyor Gary Willis arrives with his new wife Barbara and sparks begin to fly between the two. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching 1932’s “Red Dust”.

∙ Dennis and McQuarg throw Limey onto the bed that Vantine is in. When she says “you poor sap”, Vantine’s hair falls over her right eye. The lights come on and her hair is perfectly pulled back.

∙ Dennis and McQuarg are eating dinner after first meeting Vantine. When McQuarg is talking about sobering up in Singapore, the close-up shows him tearing a slice of bread in half and then picks up a salt shaker with his right hand. It cuts to a right side view of him and he’s now holding a fork in his hand.

∙ McQuarg gets up from the table with a pipe in his mouth when Vantine is talking. It appears he’s trying to strike a match. It cuts to a right side view of him and he’s holding the pipe in his hands.

∙ Gary and Barbara Willis are shown to their room. When he mentions “this is no place for you”, the closer side view of them shows only her left hand is touch his right arm and his left hand is holding the metal bed post. It cuts to a farther view and both of his arms are wrapped around her and her right arm is across him with her hand on his shoulder.

∙ When Barbara sits down at the table with Vantine, the glass lid is resting on top of the sugar dish. It cuts to a closer view of the two and the top is off. Vantine eventually puts the top back again.

∙ During the rain storm, the group is having dinner. When Gary makes the “up to something they shouldn’t be doing” comment, the close-up of Barbara and Vantine shows Vantine’s hands are on the table, not holding anything. It cuts to a close-up of Vantine and McQuarg and her elbows are propped on the table while she’s holding a cup to her mouth.

∙ After Barbara turns in for the night, the others are still talking at the table. When Dennis talks about the plantation needing to increase production, he mentions bringing Barbara down for a visit. The close-up of him and Gary shows Dennis is holding his cigarette in his right hand, over the table. When Gary stands up to check on Barbara, it cuts to a wider view and Dennis is holding the cigarette in his left hand. His right hand is now down by his side.

∙ Dennis goes to the swamp where the men are working. He’s under the tree holding his rifle and yells at the two workers above him. He’s holding the butt of the gun down, toward his right side and the barrel is up, over his left arm. McQuarg walks up and in the close-up, Dennis is now holding the gun under his right arm with the barrel facing down.

∙ CAUTION: May Contain Spoilers! Dennis is lying in bed after being shot. Vantene is reading to him from the newspaper. When she read “way across the meadow”, the close-up of her shows the ends of the paper are pointed up, toward the camera. It cuts to a wider view of her and Dennis and the crease of the newspaper is up, toward the camera.

“Red Dust” (1932) stars Clark Cable, Jean Harlow, Gene Raymond, Mary Astor, Donald Crisp and Tully Marshall. It runs 83 minutes and is Unrated.
