Socialite Irene Bullock comes across Godfrey, a “forgotten man”, as part of a scavenger hunt by society’s elite. Irene takes it upon herself to take Godfrey under her wing and hires him to become the butler for her equally tumultuous family. But the Bullock family soon learns there’s more to Godfrey than meets the eye. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “My Man Godfrey”.

∙ After Irene has asked Godfrey to be their new butler, she and her mother are arguing. In the side, close-up view of the two when her mother tells her not to shout, Irene is holding her purse in her left hand and her right hand is holding her wrist. It cuts to a farther view as Mrs. Meriwether walks by and Irene is now holding her hands are apart and she’s holding the purse in her right one.

∙ Cornelia and Irene are arguing over the way Cornelia talked to Godfrey. They’re walking toward the table and the close-up of them, when Cornelia asks “since when did you start falling in love with butlers”, shows Cornelia’s hands are by her side and empty. It cuts to a closer view when Irene says “I’m not in love with the butler”, and Cornelia is now holding a book in her hands in front of her.

∙ Godfrey is putting the flowers that arrived for Irene in a vase. In the first close-up, there is one flower in the vase. It cuts to Irene and then back to Godfrey and there are now several flowers in the vase. The scene flip flops again and it’s back to one flower in the vase.

∙ Godfrey is talking to Tommy at the club. When he comments that his family “isn’t going to find out”, his left arm is at his side while his right arm is across the table and he’s holding a cigarette in his hand. There is a matchbox sitting on the table in front of him. It cuts to a close-up of Godfrey when he says “there isn’t much of a point”, and both hands are in front of him and he’s holding the matchbox in his left hand.

“My Man Godfrey” (1936) stars William Powell, Alice Brady, Gail Patrick, Eugene Pallette, Jean Dixon, Alan Mowbray and Pat Flaherty. It runs 94 minutes and is Unrated.
