This appears to be the fourth book of tatting patterns published by a Japanese tatting designer known only as "Sumie." It is the same petite size book, 8"x 8" (20 x 20 cm), in Japanese, paperbound with full color on all pages including tutorials and diagrams. I have not yet determined a title in English for the book of tatting patterns but all the patterns are embellished with beads.

My eyes were first drawn to the beaded flowers on the cover. I was intrigued as to how Sumie got them bunched up together so lifelike. And I was impressed when I read the secret and you will be, too. Beads are integral to all the patterns and there are some bead placements that were new to me.

As this diagram and tutorial sample from page 30 shows, Sumie incorporates more than one bead placement in many of the designs. In this diagram we can see a bead placed over a picot while joining. Another bead is placed in the center of an arced chain (similar to placing a bead in the center of a ring.) The chain thread also has multiple beads snugged up on it before a join. Many of the designs are for tatted jewelry. All diagrams are clearly marked with the double stitch count. Sumie not only gives us the tatting instructions but shows in photo illustrations how to assembly the items in earrings, necklaces, or bracelets.







This project shows a simple pattern dressed with beads and made into a choker.

Basic tatting instructions in photo tutorials begin the book along with instructions for loading beads onto the thread for winding. Special techniques like the split ring and making a shuttle lock join are shown but the new tatter may want to view other online tatting aids to help.
