How to Memorize the Scripture

Every Christian should learn the word of God, because it is the will for his life. Every answer for today’s problem is in the Bible. As a new Christian, I was excited about memorizing the word of God. I am glad that I put the scripture to memory, because it helps with my prayer life. Through the years, I have found a few tips to help memorize the word of God.

The first effective tip I discovered was to write and re-write each line I wanted to remember. Writing and looking at scripture, allows a person to retain information during repetition, because of using the senses of touch and movement. The more senses that are used together during repetition, the stronger it is to remember the word of God.

The next tip is to memorize scripture during an activity that is done every day. For example, practice memorizing that first line of scripture during your morning shower, or while brushing your teeth. Say it silently in your head, while brushing your teeth or you will make a mess. You can also sing the word of God in the shower. That is my favorite technique or creating impromptu prayers after you have remembered scripture!

The third tip is to post a visual reminder of the scripture on a sticky note, or note card in a routine location. You can place a visual reminder on the refrigerator, or on your office desk. Instead of having photographs on my office desk, I have two frames with two of my favorite scriptures on them. This also helps me to keep the word of God fresh in my mind and also comes in handy, if I need to apply that particular scripture to a situation throughout the day.

The fourth tip is to read the scripture aloud. You can read as many lines as you want, but for starters, remember a line at a time. After much success, you can start grouping as many lines as you can handle. If you want to practice alone to develop confidence, that is a good idea, but practicing with others is more fun and beneficial for everyone.

My final tip for memorizing scripture is to schedule a time during family Bible Study to memorize scripture, or to give assignments after family Bible Study. It is best to check back with every family member the next week, to see if scripture was learned. If scripture was not learned, members can try until everyone has learned the assigned scripture. This allows each family member to know that others are rooting for him to succeed and can rejoice when scripture is memorized.

It is time to get creative with these tips. You might want to combine some tips or think of some of your own to share in the forum. Well, it is time for me to memorize my scripture. Please meet me in the forum to discuss whether these tips helped you, or if you tried some tips I did not mentioned.
