As odd as the images may seem, toilets often appear in our dreams because they are a necessary part of our waking life. We all use toilets daily. Toilets are a modern day tool that provides society with a better level of health sanitation. We often underestimate the convenience and importance of a well-functioning toilet.
Because they are designed to remove human excrement, toilets in dreams generally symbolize the ability to express unwanted or residual thoughts and feelings. When we eat food, our bodies metabolize it, taking nutrients and passing out the remaining waste. The waste flushes down the toilet with water (a symbol of emotion), leaving us unburdened. Excreting is vital to well being. Hence, toilets are important tools we use to cleanse ourselves.
If a toilet appears in your dreams, ask yourself what feelings and thoughts need to be released? What feelings does this dream toilet elicit? Are you ashamed? Frozen in fear? Relieved? Angry? Consider the condition and location of the toilet as well.
Here are some possible meanings of toilets when they appear in your dreams.
Common toilet dream symbols
Public toilet. A public toilet represents your ability or inability to express your less pleasant thoughts and emotions in front of others. Is the toilet in a building? What type (school, office, etc.)? Is the toilet behind doors for some measure of privacy?
Sitting on a toilet in public view. Being exposed during your toilet moments indicates that while expressing your unpleasant thoughts and emotions, you will have an audience. If your feelings about being seen in public while on a toilet bring you shame, anxiety or humiliation, this could mean that you fear recrimination for revealing your thoughts and feelings. Perhaps, they won't meet with public approval.
Sitting on a toilet that is on a stage or platform. In the dreamer's waking life, he is being expected to spill his guts (be truthful) in front of others. This type of person often is the center of a social group and feels as though he must "perform" as eyes are upon him. Whether or not the dreamer can "go" on the stage toilet indicates whether he feels comfortable expressing his true feelings. Not being able to go (constipation) means he is holding everything in.
Sparkling clean toilet. When the dreamer does express himself, he will do so in a clean manner as in not using toilet language or dirty tactics. His words will be pure and honest.
Dirty toilet. This symbol is opposite of the clean toilet. If a dreamer sees a dirty toilet, it can represent his manner of expressing himself needs to be "cleaned up."

Toilet that won't flush. Expressing oneself is one matter but being able to "flush" away negative thoughts is different. A non-working toilet often appears when the dreamer can't let go of negative feelings after expressing them.
Not being able to "go" on the toilet. Not feeling safe enough to express your true thoughts and feelings.
Dreaming about needing to use the toilet and waking up with the need to "go." This typically is the brain's way of triggering the wakeful state when the body needs to evacuate.

Seeing feces in the toilet. Seeing your own fecal matter in the toilet indicates that before you flush away your negative thoughts, you'll examine them first.

Having too much toilet paper that is all over the place. There could be a huge effort by others to help the dreamer that will be too much, unnecessary. It could cause more challenges with being unable to let go of the issues that brought the dreamer to wanting to express himself in the first place.
Seeing a baby flushed down the toilet. Getting rid of a project. Not placing value on it. Disregarding something or someone who represents innocence in the dreamer's waking life.
