First published in 1956, The Lonely Doll tells a timeless story of childhood. Edith is a beautiful doll who starts out anxious for friends. One day two bears arrive to be her friends. Edith and Little Bear have an exciting adventure with playing "dress up" which any child, or former child will relate to. Mr. Bear takes care of Edith and Little Bear.
Gift From the Lonely Doll, first published in 1966, is a sweet story of Christmas giving, just perfect to share with a child. This book is filled with delightfully detailed photographs of favorite Holiday activities such as making secret gifts, decorating the house, cooking, sledding, ice skating, visiting family and friends, and sharing a Holiday meal in your best outfit. The photographs are fun to look at and full of all Edith's lovely clothes. These are the kind of books to sit with and absorb. My only problem with the photographs is that they are not in color, which is just a personal preference for me. I would love to see them in color, but I realize there is a certain charm to black and white photographs, as well.
There are other books in The Lonely Doll series, including Edith and Mr. Bear, Holiday for Edith and The Bears and The Lonely Doll Learns a Lesson.
I highly recommend The Lonely Doll books by Dare Wright for yourself, and especially, for reading and sharing all the pictures with children.
