Professor Dumbledore Portraits

Regular readers have read a previous article about Professor Dumbledore’s return in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In the article, I wrote about whether J K Rowling will return Professor Albus Dumbledore from the dead? I discussed the pros and cons.

There is one certainty. Harry Potter will fight his foe, Lord Voldemort in Book 7. And, to succeed, he will need help from his friend and mentor, Professor Albus Dumbledore.

Professor Dumbledore portraits are one way, he can remain dead, but help his young friend. J K Rowling may have him talk with Harry Potter and the others through his portraits. Remember deceased Headmasters’ portraits hang in the Headmasters’ suite. Also, famous, highly respected Heads have portraits in various Wizardry buildings.

Headmasters are free to move to and fro from any of their portraits and visit the living. They have the freedom to observe and listen to the activities of the living. The Heads can report to the living what is happening. Although, Dumbledore is dead, he can use the portraits to help the Order of the Phoenix.

This is one reason, besides the obvious, J K Rowling removes Cornelius Fudge as the Minister of Magic. Professor Albus Dumbledore would not be so revered, if Fudge still headed the Ministry. In that scenario, Dumbledore’s portraits would not hang in Wizardry buildings and homes.

Think about how things are done in the Muggle world. Let’s use Great Britain, for example, since that is J K Rowling’s country. Ten years ago, Princess Diana, the Princess of Wales died. There were portraits everywhere of Princess Diana in Great Britain. Heck, there were probably portraits in private Muggle homes.

Imagine Professor Dumbledore portraits hanging in important Wizardry buildings. There are portraits hanging in private homes. Say a portrait, in the Weasleys Burrow or Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. Professor Dumbledore and friends will have one heck of a network.

The network is safe because Dumbledore has no qualms of using it in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In the book, Professor Dolores Umbridge has spies everywhere, in and out of Hogwarts. Remember, she almost catches Sirius Black in the fireplace.

This brings up another point. The new Headmaster at Hogwarts or the final one, has to be an enemy of You-Know-Who. Or, Hogwarts will not open in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Why? The deceased Headmaster is honor bound to help the present Headmaster.

How horrible would it be for Professor Dumbledore to have to give service to a Headmaster in the league with Lord Voldemort? There is no way to forgo any request. A former Headmaster, Phineas Nigellus Black, did not want to do Dumbledore’s bidding in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He almost causes a fight with the other deceased Headmasters. There were shouts, “insubordination, dereliction of duty,” directed at Nigellus.
