The Story Of Adam

Stories From The Quran - The Creation of Adam.

The story of Adam and Eve in Islam has many similarities to Christianity, but also some important differences. Here is the story of the creation of Adam as told in the Quran.

When Allah decided to create Adam He told the angels about it first.

"And when thy Lord said unto the angels, Lo! I am about to place a viceroy in the earth, they said, 'Wilt thou place therein one who will do harm therein and who will shed blood, while we, we hymn Thy praises and sanctify Thee. He (ALLAH) said 'Surely I know that which you do not" - Surah Baqar

So Allah created Adam from clay and put into him His own Spirit or Divine Energy. Thus Adam became the first human being.

Then Allah gave Adam better knowledge than any of His other creation. The knowledge that the Angels have is limited to their duties, but humans have been given the ability to increase their knowledge and can understand many things in the Universe and beyond.

"And He (Allah) taught Adam all the names, then showed them to the angels, saying 'Inform Me (Allah) of the names of these if you are truthful. They said, 'Be glorified! We have no knowledge saving that which thou has taught us. Lo! Thou art The Knower, The Wise.'

He (Allah) said 'O Adam, inform them of their names, and when he informed them of their names, He (Allah) said 'Did I not tell you that I know the secret of the heavens and the earth> And I know that which you disclose and which you hide?" Surah (Chapter )Baqar 31-33

Then Allah ordered the Angels to prostrate before Adam. All of them complied, except for Iblees, who refused, claiming that he was superior to man because he was created from fire and man was created from clay.

"And (remember) when We said unto the angels, 'Fall prostrate before Adam, and they fell prostrate all save Iblees, he was of the Jinn, so he rebelled against his Lord's command?"
Surah Al Kahf

Allah was very displeased with the arrogance and pride of Iblees, and asked him "What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? Iblees said 'How can it be that I should prostrate myself before one whom thou hast created from fermented clay! Allah said 'If that is so, be out from here, an outcast, accursed until the Judgement Day." Surah Hajr

Instead if being grateful, Iblees said "Give me respite until Judgment Day. Allah said 'Respite is given thee. Iblees said 'Because Thou hast made me go astray I will make glamorous things of Earth for them and I will lead them astray save those who are Thine sincere bondsman.' Allah said 'This is the right path to Me. Thou salt have no power over my sincere bondsman, thou shall lead only the others astray, and for them is my promise of Hell Fire."
