Dog Food Recall for Diamond Pet Food

On April 26, 2012, Diamond Pet Foods issued a voluntary recall bulletin with the FDA regarding Chicken Soup for the Dog Loverís Soul pet food. Quality control testing revealed their dog food had been exposed to salmonella.

Upon the issuance of the recall there were no reported outbreaks of illness. However, the pet food company wants to make certain potentially affected dog food is contained.

Salmonella symptoms to watch for include loss of appetite, fever, stomach sensitive to touch, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargic demeanor. It is possible for people to contract salmonella through handling contaminated pet food. It is important to thoroughly wash hands, surface areas, bowls, and utensils after handling pet food.

All stores have been directed to pull these products off the shelves and return it to Diamond Pet Foods for proper disposal. Purchased products can be returned to the place of original sale for a refund. Use caution with open bags so that food particles do not escape into the air while handling. If you have purchased the light dog food and it is stamped within the best used by time frame, it is advisable to return the food for a refund even if the lot numbers do not match.

If animals have consumed any of the products, it is wise to bring a sample of the food to the vetís office in the event animals become symptomatic. Be sure to keep the sample in an airtight disposable container.

Chicken Soup for the Dog Loverís Soul is manufactured in Meta, Missouri. Diamond Pet Foods is a privately held, family owned company. In addition to producing Chicken Soup for the Cat/Dog Loverís Soul, they also manufacture pet food under the brand name Diamond Naturals. The states most likely affected are Missouri, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Ohio, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. However, if you live outside the states of primary concern and use Diamond Pet Foods you should check the brand name, lot numbers, and best by stamp and return the food for a refund.
