Three Romantic Movies

Coming soon to a theatre near you, three romantic movies that are generating a lot of buzz. I'm very excited about two of them and a little skeptical of the third.

Brokeback Mountain - December 9th Release Date
Starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal
"Brokeback Mountain" was a favorite of the Telluride Film Festival and a best selling short story. In this beautiful adaptation of the short story, a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy fall in love and begin a relationship that is both desperate and beautiful. Heath Ledger is Ennis Del Mar and Jake Gyllenhaal is Jack Twist, two men who are born and raised in rural 1960s. Although their attraction to each other is undeniable and eventually their hearts become involved, their lives dictate that their relationship remain a secret. You can't help but root for these two, wondering if their love will end in disaster or if somehow it can prevail... The story was amazing and I hope the film will be just as memorable. From what I hear, the starring performances were Oscar worthy.

Memoirs of a Geisha - December 23rd (Nationwide) Release Date
Starring Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe, and Michelle Yeoh
"Memoirs of a Geisha" was one of my all-time favorite novels. The story sucked me in immediately and I was fascinated with the life portrayed in the story. I'm thrilled that the book is now a film. The screenplay was partly written by the author of the book, so the film should reflect the story fairly accurately. "Memiors..." is the story of a poor young Japanese girl who is sold to a geisha house where she is cruelly abused. The girl's beauty is her downfall until she is noticed and saved by a famous geisha. The woman trains her and helps the girl recreate herself as one of the most celebrated geisha in all of Japan. Although I've heard several complaints about Chinese and Amerasian actors portraying Japanese in this film, apparently they did a great job. I'm excited to see the movie and hope I won't be disappointed.

Rumor Has It... - December Release Date
Starring Jennifer Anniston and Kevin Costner
In this film a young woman (Jennifer Anniston) does a little family research and discovers that the classic film "The Graduate" was based on her own family. She also realizes that she might be the result of the relationship between the the two mismatched lovers! Perhaps in order to avoid her own impending nupitals, she pursues the man who may be able to help her finds more answers.

So which film appeals to you most? I'm very excited about the first two, but a little iffy of the last. I will reserve judgement until I see it of course... If you see either of these films in a sneak preview, or if you have already seen either of them, email me and I'll post your comments in the forum!
