Dreamboat Annie – LIVE by Heart

Two Discussions
My husband and I had two very serious discussions this week. One was about the Cleveland Indians and their pitching game – we live in Ohio, so this is allowed conversation – and the second was about the term “classic” in reference to rock music.

I’ve always been shy about using this term because well . . . it makes me feel old. I hear music being played on classic rock stations that takes me back to my high school days and although that was a wee bit ago, I don’t want to dwell on the time frame. Jeff had a good point. He didn’t use the word “old” in his definition of “classic”. Instead, he defined the term as meaning something that was entrenched in history because of its contribution to society and all things labeled as being a part of our culture. Like pop culture. He even brought up the recent conversation I had with a young man I met at a Genesis concert that had discovered their music through his father’s record collection.

So, I write this article today to help you make a musical discovery or rekindle a memory or two. This writing is about Heart and their newest release Dreamboat Annie Live.

Two Incredible Women – Two Incredible Projects
Heart is Ann and Nancy Wilson, they are sisters, with one being older than the other. Their band hit radio stations and record charts in the ‘70s, and have continued to touch the ‘80s, ‘90s and now. On April 17, 2007, Heart took the stage at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles to record a live version of their 1976 release, Dreamboat Annie. At the same time, the show was recorded for a DVD and the set is the first release from Shout! Factory in their new DVD/CD series “Legendary Albums Live”.

I should back up and say these are not just two ordinary sisters; these two women are talented, beautiful, creative and determined. Their lyric writing tells stories with plots carried by their extraordinary voices that harmonize as well as individually reach the high and low notes. They have stayed the music course. They’ve survived the radio station format changes, records, 8-tracks, cassettes, CDs and digital music files.

Dreamboat Annie sold over 3 million copies. Heart – Ann and Nancy – taught me that rock was not just for the guys. Girls could and should rock.
Yes, they are classic, and a very big part of music history. At the same time, they are evergreen and a very big part of pop culture today. With the holiday season being so close, my advice is to gift both the CD and the DVD to yourself and someone you love, someone you want to introduce to a band that has made the musical journey on rock stations and pop stations. Heart is one of those bands that people are referring to when they say things like “now that was music”, or “they knew how to rock”. They did and they still do.
