Does Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) really work? How can ďtappingĒ clear out limiting beliefs? Thatís exactly what I wanted to know so I posed these questions to Janet Hilts, a well-respected EFT practitioner. I think youíll find my interview with Ms. Hilts interesting and informative.
Note from Sharon: Let me begin by saying that Iíve tried EFT in the past. I wouldnít say I was skeptical of EFT but I wasnít a full-blown believer either. After this interview I realized two things: 1. I hadnít really given EFT a chance; and 2. You have to choose a practitioner with whom you can develop trust and rapport.
I sat down with Janet Hilts a Level 3 EFT Practitioner and here is a part of that interview:
Sharon Michaels: Janet, thank you for this interview. Iím a little familiar with EFT but I have questions. What exactly is the theory behind Emotional Freedom Technique and how does it work?
Janet Hilts: Thatís a good question. EFT is based on stimulating energy pressure points or meridians. Think of it as acupuncture but there are no needles, youíre using your fingertips to tap on the meridians.
EFT clears emotional disruptions in your energy system, thereby clearing away negative emotions. Iím content to say that I donít know exactly HOW it works, but Iím certain that it DOES work.
Sharon: Is EFT like regular/conventional therapy techniques?
Janet: Compared to regular therapy, EFT is faster and it lasts. I especially appreciate EFT because it can be done without traumatizing the person doing the EFT work. I found EFT to be most effective when a person is on the verge of going forward and canít get over a block that seems to be stopping them. EFT is painless! Basically a practitionerís role is to assist in showing you how to clear your own energy system.
Sharon: Whatís an EFT session like?
Janet: I like to begin by spending the first fifteen to twenty minutes talking and establishing rapport. I listen very carefully to what the person is and isnít saying. Then, we give the issue or energy block a name and a voice. When we do that, it alerts your energy system to the location of the energy disruption so it can be cleared. Weíre bringing the energy to the surface so it can be addressed and healed. The goal of a session is to focus on one specific issue at a time.
We then begin ďtappingĒ on the meridians/energy channels. I tap on myself as the other person taps on their own meridians. The entire time weíre tapping on the fourteen different meridians, weíre verbally addressing the issue/energy block.
I also think itís important to use humor. Usually weíre working on some pretty heavy emotional issues and itís a relief to be able to laugh.
I close the session using NeuroLinguistic Programming to further eliminate any residue energy blocks. All and all a session lasts about 75 minutes.
Sharon: Do I have to be face to face with a practitioner or can EFT be done over the telephone?
Janet: Most practitioners offer telephone sessions and face-to-face sessions. I believe with proper instruction you should be able to work with a practitioner over the telephone even if you live across the country from him/her. Thatís the beauty of EFT; you can apply it anywhere at anytime.
Sharon: Any final thoughts?
Janet: I donít make any claims that it cures diseases and Iím not a psychologist. Iíve used EFT myself and I know it works if youíre willing to put in the effort. This is a very positive and painless way to eliminate limiting beliefs. Iíve seen lives change for the better!
Sharon: Thank you Janet and I learned some new things about EFT.
