Cut Back On Excess Calories
Even though most of us refuse to admit it, we indulged quite a bit while we were pregnant because we had an excuse. Don't feel guilty, everyone does it and some people are luckier than others because they don't gain as much fat. The key now that the baby is here is to cut back about 300-500 calories per day (breastfeeding mothers are an exception). If you are not aware of how much you are eating just write down everything for 2 days and you'll quickly find out that you are eating entirely too much.
Start A Moderate Exercise Program
Who has the energy when you're hardly getting any sleep. The catch is, if you begin exercising you will get better quality sleep. Don't worry, right now your body only requires minimum effort, such as 10-20 minutes of walking a day in addition to lower back and ab work 3 times a week. Start with basic pelvic tilts, planks, cat and cow pose, and back extensions. This willl give you the core strength necessary to begin a more challenging exercise regimen. If you've had a c-section or very tough labor wait at least 6 weeks before starting any type of exercise.
Eat 6 High Energy Meals Daily
Eat small, eat often, and eat high energy to boost metabolism. This means staying clear of most processed foods, sugar, excessive amounts of caffeine, fast food, food high in saturated fat, and starchy carbs. The more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats you have the more energy you'll have and the better your body will metabolize all that excess fat.
Get Rest & Relaxation
It can be temtping to want to get everything done while the baby is sleeping but resting and relaxing is important to relieve the type of stress that often contributes to weight gain. Sleep, read a book, watch your favorite talk show, chat with a friend while laying down. The more sleep and rest you get the better your body functions and the faster you lose the weight.
It's fun and natural to get caught up in your baby but don't forget that you have basic needs and wants as well. Take a hot bath, wear nice clothes, fix your hair, go to a movie or restaurant. When you treat your self well and take pride in your appearance you are more likely to eat right and exercise than if you walk around in dirty sweats and stay home all the time. You'll also make a happier and better mom!!!
