It is never too early to begin your tatted entries for the State and local fairs. To inspire you here is a vintage edging. This classic wheel edging earned Mabel Stanley the $1 prize as reported in the April 20, 1919 newspaper in Cuyahoga Falls [Ohio.] Directions have been modernized for tatting convenience.

Heading is a line of opposing rings joined at the sides.
R 1: 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 clr. rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
R 2: 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 clr. rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
*R 3: 4 + (join to last picot of ring 1) 4 - 4 - 4 clr. rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
R 4: 4 + (join to last picot of ring 2) 4 - 4 - 4 clr. rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
Repeat from *for desired length

Medallion (Tatted Wheel)

Leave a long tail as the round center ring is tatted first; the 12th picot becomes a mock picot and the long tail is used to create a split ring to climb into the next row of alternating large and small rings.

Ring of 11 picots separated by 2 ds. Close ring and use tail to create mock picot. Continue to use the long tail to tat one split ring:

Split Ring 6 / 6 (Use the shuttle to begin the ring and tat 6 ds. Next bring up the long tail and use it to wrap 6 ds. Use shuttle to close ring.) DNRW

Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
Large ring 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
*Small ring 6 + (join to picot of center ring) 6 clr rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm
Large ring 4 + (join to last picot of previous lg ring) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Leave bare thread space of 3/8"or 1 cm

Repeat from * around, joining two of the large rings to the heading by the center picot. Use magic thread trick to hide both the shuttle tail and the long tail in the last ring.
