Developing a Selfless Attitude

We spend a lot of time wondering about what we are going to do next time. But what if there wasn't a next time? In truth, the only moment that we have any say over is the one we are living in. The now.

We cannot change the moments that have passed and it does us no good to try to relive them. We cannot change the moments that are to come. All we can really do is focus on the present.

This philosophy can be applied to charitable work. Try to pay more attention to the needs of others. You may get happiness from creating joy for others. While you are being charitable, have fun with it. Start taking the time to search for a need, a volunteer opportunity, a kind word, and a listening ear. What are you doing right now that serves purpose, brings joy, and creates harmony?

The internet is circulating with stories of random acts of kindness. Stories about people going out of their way to do something without anything in return.

If you search the internet, there are websites devoted to promoting random acts of kindness. In my searching of kind acts, I came across many ideas. Here are a few of the suggestions:

Hold the door open for someone
Donate used books to your local library
Participate in food drives –(check your local food pantry or United Way)
Offer someone words of encouragement
Donate used clothing – (check your local Salvation Army or Goodwill)
Thank your parents
Be more eco friendly: ride your bike, or plant a tree. By doing this random act of kindness, you are giving back to your environment.

These are some of the ways you can pay it forward. One of the most inspiring stories about selfless giving is told in the movie, The Blind Side. This story portrays how one woman did a selfless act by welcoming a teenager in her family; regardless of race, age or any other factor. Her selfless act changed someone’s future, for the better.

I would love to hear your stories on random acts of kindness. Please stop by our forums and share your experience!
