It is with much regret that I am resigning my post as Unemployment Editor for Bella Online. I have had the wonderful pleasure of researching and writing articles for this site for the past year. While the circumstances of leaving Bella Online would be different from those of leaving a paid position, it does bring to mind the question of quitting a job especially in a questionable economy. Why do people quit? What factors come into play when making the decision? What emotions do you go through?

Resigning for health reasons. Often times we embark on careers that require a certain level of physical production or repetitive motions which eventually begin to take its toll. Though we have the best of intentions, physical problems prohibit us from doing the best job that we intend to do. While we may try to hold on as long as we can, there comes a time when completing the work without further physical deterioration becomes impossible. Sometimes it’s best to let go when the physical burden becomes overwhelming.

Resigning due to being overwhelmed or stressed. While we may be engaged in a career that we truly have a passion for, sometimes it can be too much of a good thing. For example, a writer that submits articles for five or more columns – can become overwhelmed with deadlines even though they truly love writing. The reasons are numerous. Quality writing requires research, writing drafts and many other tasks. Instead of writing quality pieces, the author ends up mass producing articles without depth or soul. Concentrating on a core few instead of a larger quantity provides for quality work.

While I am quick to state that this has never been an issue at Bella Online, experts warn companies that they should never take the status of their employees for granted, even during a bad economy. While money factors may come into play, inevitably the troubles that an employee is experiencing will win out and they will leave. Some will even take their chances and quit before they have found gainful employment elsewhere.

For me, the decision to resign as the Unemployment Editor was definitely fraught with emotions. Many hours of tossing and turning during sleepless nights, worrying about not providing material has kept me awake many nights. This was one of my first professional writing venues. The staff and management have always been very helpful, caring and friendly. The decision was made in fairness to the many readers who have faithfully sent me their questions and concerns regarding unemployment and definitely deserve more frequent interaction.

I am happy to say that I will not be leaving Bella Online completely. I will remain on as the Career Training Editor. I have always told my readers that hopefully, with great happiness, that one day they would find a job and leave me.
