Using Technology to Enhance Wedding Planning

In a culture where the world is at our fingertips with the help of laptops, tablets and smartphones, it seems only natural that our wedding planning follow suit. As any bride can attest, planning a wedding requires serious organization, so why not utilize all resources at hand including the electronics we have become so reliant upon.

I am a traditionalist at heart, so I would never disregard my wedding planning binder; the "Bible" of coordinating, if you will. With that said, armed with a planning binder and the aid of electronic organization, a bride is ready to hit the ground running to plan her big day.

A great way to lay the foundation of your electronic planning is to set up a dedicated wedding email address. This is especially helpful when attending bridal expos where you will be signing up for giveaways, coupons and vendor information. You will get a lot of advertisements and this is a useful means to weed through it all without clogging up your personal email.

Additionally, you can use this email address for your registries. Again, having this wedding email will keep things segregated and when you no longer need it, you can simply cancel the address entirely.

To further utilize the web for your planning needs, acquaint yourself with the "cloud"; a virtual document storage location offered by many software providers. This is a great tool for contracts, spreadsheets, checklists and even photos you've saved for wedding inspiration.

Depending on the provider you choose, a virtual record of your entire wedding binder can literally be wherever you need it to be. Sharing and editing RSVP lists with your fiancé is a snap and you can easily pull out your tablet during a vendor meeting to flip through décor ideas or finalize contract details.

As I mentioned before, these ideas are a great supplement to the traditional wedding binder but I do always recommend keeping a hard copy of the most recent document updates in the binder itself. I like the idea of one “planning foot” in the cloud while keeping the other foot firmly planted on the ground with your binder in hand.

The internet is our go-to resource for just about any need, wedding planning included. Using it to search for inspiration and then maintain organization while you are planning is a wonderful way to stay on track.

As we've seen with numerous personal wedding websites popping up, the internet is also an innovative way to keep your friends and family informed about your upcoming wedding. These sites give your loved ones a peek at the life you and your fiancé share. They also include registry information, hotel accommodations and directions, all while keeping your guests up to date on your plans for the big day.

If you or your fiancé happen to be tech-savvy, consider setting up a personal domain which redirects to your wedding site. This might impress your guests while making it easier for them to remember the website address.

Finally, to further include your guests and technology in your wedding plans, try incorporating it into your wedding reception. For couples active on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, set up a wedding account and display a live feed near the bar at the reception. Encourage your guests to post comments and photos while they enjoy celebrating your special day. This interactive guestbook will be a fun addition you and your guest are bound to enjoy throughout the evening.

Weddings are without a doubt steeped in tradition (even the planning), but if you are willing, integrating technology into the process may prove to be beneficial. You can't go wrong with too much organization while planning a wedding; utilizing all your resources will help get the job done smoothly and efficiently.
