Stroke is now considered by scientists to be both preventable and treatable. The incidence of permanent damage or death can be significantly reduced - as long as the stroke patient gets immediate diagnosis and treatment. That’s why it’s important for people to be aware of both stroke risk factors and stroke symptoms.
Certain stroke risk factors such as family history, race, gender and age can’t be altered. But there are many other factors that can be managed to greatly reduce the risk of stroke – even for those with a family history.
Diet and exercise can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and prevent diabetes and heart disease, which are all significant stroke risk factors. You can begin by eating a healthy diet and reaching and maintaining your optimum weight.
You’ll also want to exercise for at least a half hour five to seven days a week. Brisk walking is highly recommended. Exercise also helps to manage weight and to reduce stress. Yoga, tai-chi and meditation are also excellent stress management techniques.
By being aware of your hereditary and genetic stroke risk, plus healthfully managing the stroke risk factors under your control, research has proven that your chances of disability or death from stroke can actually be kept lower than the risk for injury or death from accidental causes.
