August '04 Paranormals

Hello, and welcome back!

Still looking for something to read at the beach? Maybe one of these three new paranormals due out next week will fit the bill.

Like vampires? Combined with a chick lit tone? Mary Janice Davidson's Undead and Unemployed
Undead and Unemployed
(Berkley) has queen of the vampires, Betsy Taylor's next outing, fighting against someone killing her vampires. Not my cup of tea, as you know, with the vampires, chick lit tone, and being told in first person, but I'm sure there are lots of you out there who'd disagree with me on any or all of those points.

Like a little science with your fantasy? Christine Feehan's Mind Game
Mind Game
(Jove) is heading for bookstores, too. Nicolas Trevane has volunteered for the job of bringing in Dahlia Le Blanc before someone else finds her, to bring her to safety with her long-lost adopted sister and the others who make up their unconventional 'family'. I was intrigued by this one, with Dahlia's paranormal talents, though I didn't love what seemed like a convenient excuse later in the story for the pair to have sex all the time. I like a steamy romance, but this didn't work for me. Still, an engrossing read, and I have to wonder which of Nicolas's band of warriors will get the next story in this series. I'm borrowing three of Cupid's arrows for this one.

Finally, we have P. C. Cast's Goddess of Spring
Goddess of Spring
(Berkley), with Lina Santoro is desperate to increase her bakery's business, so desperate she's even willing to try a spell included with a recipe for pizza dough. Of course, finding out that her plea comes with a mama goddess determined to have her way where her daughter is concerned isn't something a woman can agree to immediately, but Lina's a woman of her word. But switching places with Persephone to go to Hades? Could be trouble. This story is a lot of fun, and if you like your mythology, it's an interesting take on this particular tale. This one's earned four arrows.

Until next time, happy reading!
