Quilt Blocks of the States - Kentucky Patch

Kentucky Patch - 12" Quilt Block

The next block in our state block series is Kentucky Patch. This block combines quarter-square triangles with nine-patch blocks set on point.

Fabric Key:

Cutting Instructions:

Cut three 5-1/4" squares and eight 2-7/8" squares.

Cut sixteen 1-1/2" squares.

Cut twenty 1-1/2" squares.

Cut three 5-1/4" squares.

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: With a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw two diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all yellow 5-1/4" squares.

Step 2: With right sides together, place a yellow 5-1/4" square on top of a brown 5-1/4" square. Sew a 1/4" seam on each side of ONE of the lines that you drew in Step 1. Cut apart on BOTH drawn lines and press seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Trim points. Repeat once more for a total of eight yellow/brown quarter square triangle units.

Step 3: With right sides together, sew two yellow/brown quarter square triangle units along the longest edge. Press seam allowance to one side and trim points. Repeat with the remaining five pairs of yellow/brown quarter square triangle units for a total of six "hourglass" units. (Note: You will only need five "hourglass" units for this block. You will have one left over.)

Step 4: Using the light and dark green 1-1/2" squares, make four nine-patch units as shown below:

Step 5: Using your rotary cutter and a ruler, cut all brown 2-7/8" squares once diagonally to make sixteen triangles. Sew brown triangles to opposite sides of a nine patch block as shown below. Press and trim points. Sew brown triangles to the remaining sides of the nine patch block as shown below. Press and trim points. Repeat three more times for a total of four.

Step 6: Arrange the sections as shown below and sew into rows (Diagram 1). Sew the rows together to finish the block (Diagram 2).

Your block should measure 12-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 12" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.
