Turkey Vultures Photo and Information

The turkey vulture is found in just about all parts of north america. It is one of the largest birds of prey in the americas, and can reach wing spans of up to 6 feet. The other two members of the turkey vulture family are the black vulture and the Californian condor. Vultures in general are part of the stork family.

Turkey vultures feed mostly on carrion. Their bald head makes it easier for them to get into bone areas for those smaller bits of flesh. Sometimes they will also eat rodents or other small animals. Vultures play a key part in the ecology of an area, clearing away the dead so that the living have a clean environment to thrive in.

Turkey vultures are generally solitary, although sometimes 3 or 4 will circle together. Both parents will raise the 2-3 chicks that are born and care for them for almost 3 months before the tots are off on their own.
