Wacky August Holidays

It’s that time of the month again! BILLS! And holidays! Here are a few of the holidays you can look forward to in August.

August is a month of special celebrations. Not only is it National Family Fun Month, it’s also the month to Admit You’re Happy, National Catfish Month, National Golf Month, and National Picnic Month.

National Raspberry Cream Pie Day starts the month off right! Of course, it’s followed by National Ice Cream Sandwich Day on August 2nd—what a sweet way to start off a hot month! The first Sunday of August is National Friendship Day and International Forgiveness Day—so, share your pie and ice cream and forgive yourself for indulging.

Don’t let your boss know, but August 5th is Work Like a Dog Day, so if you’re a work-o-holic, this day’s for you! August 8th, make sure to watch your porch! It’s Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day (I’m not making this up)! Make sure to keep a vigilant watch over your porch lest the zucchini fairy become angered! The 10th is your day to relax—Lazy Day, which happens to coincide with National S’Mores Day. So, relax, kick back and enjoy your chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker treat!

Middle children everywhere will love August 12th—it’s their day! And if they’re left-handed, they get to celebrate on the 13th, as well, during Left Hander’s Day! If you’re a South Paw, celebrate your uniqueness! Only about 7-10% of the population is left handed. Also, the twin of a left-hander has a 76% chance of being left handed. Pretty interesting—check out more facts on wikipedia.

V-J Day—the end of World War II—is August 14th, the day Japan announced their surrender; or the 15th, the day the US announced the war was over; or the 2nd of September, the day the official statement was signed into effect on the USS Missouri. Any of these dates are viable dates for celebrating—and they’re all part of US History!

August 19th is a good day to celebrate the pilot in your life—it’s Aviation Day! Some of the great pioneers of aviation include the following: Chuck Yeager, famous for breaking the sound barrier; The Red Baron, famous fighter pilot of World War I; Charles Lindberg, famous for the first transcontinental flight; Amelia Erhart, famous for being the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic (as well as many other records).

Honor that special Senior Citizen in your life on August 21st. It’s Senior Citizen’s Day and they deserve the respect earned from so long a life! They may even think you’re an angel, but they’ll have to wait til August 22nd for Be an Angel Day to tell you! August 24th marks the anniversary of the day in 79 A.D. when Mt. Vesuvius erupted. This particular eruption is one of the largest recorded in history. The blast destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabaie. The deaths totaled over 3300. When it erupted again in 1631, the damage was just as massive and the death toll just as high.

The 26th is a great day to end arguments—or start them just to end them! It’s Kiss And Make Up Day! So, grab that person you’re angry at and go to town! Remember: It’s kiss and make up

The 30th celebrates all the evil geniuses of the world with Frankenstein Day. Jonathan Coulton has a song all about this kind of thing called “Skullcrusher Mountain.” As a last little note, here are some of the lyrics to the song—just for Frankenstein Day!
I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you
But I get the feeling that you don't like it
What's with all the screaming?
You like monkeys, you like ponies
Maybe you don't like monsters so much
Maybe I used too many monkeys
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Whatever day you decide to celebrate, have a great August!
