National Alliance of Blind Students

The National Alliance of Blind Students (NABS) is a nationwide membership organization of blind and visually impaired high school and college students.

NABS was founded in 1974 as a special-interest affiliate of the American Council of the Blind (ACB). Many of its members have gone on to become professionals and major leaders in the blind community. Christopher Gray, originally from Seattle, WA, and a founding member of NABS, resides today in San Francisco, is a technical writer with Symantec Corporation and is president of the 20'000-member American Council of the Blind.

NABS holds its annual convention along with the American Council of the Blind. Activities include informative programs and workshops, exhibits, and fun events such as a comedy night, mixers and pizza parties. The 2005 convention will be in Las Vegas from July 2 to July 9; find out more by visiting the ACB website at www.acb.org, or just click on the link at the bottom of this page.

NABS publishes "The Student Advocate" which includes information and resources of interest to high school and college students. NABS also maintains a website where you may read "The Student Advocate"; find resources of interest to students, their teachers and parents; and subscribe to a free email list.

NABS currently has affiliates in eight states: California, Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsolvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. Students who do not belong to a state affiliate may join NABS directly.
