Planning to promote your special library event.
Every portion of a library promotion must be coordinated with the principal. Begin by discussing bringing a special guest speaker, to include the type of speaker. For the 2004-2005 school year we brought in Chambers Stevens to promote public speaking. Discuss the costs involved. Will the school absorb the cost? Will students be charged an "entrance fee"? When the idea has been given approval, begin casually mentioning it to students, faculty, and staff. The hope is that students will mention the even to their parents.
As the event gets closer discuss the formal details of the event. Put posters up in the halls, a notice in the newspaper, and in the school newsletter. Does your school have a website? Don't overlook this vehicle for communication.
The week before send a flyer home with each student. Include all appropriate information (will the speaker's books be sold at the event?) and the contact point. Announcements can be provided to the office for daily reminders. Try and make these "fun" to listen to.
Clean and decorate the library to prepare it for show time. If possible welcome family members in person. When doing the introduction take the time to welcome all guests and briefly mention the library program. An introduction of the guest should be made. Stand back and take a deep breath.
If you plan and integrate the special event into the school, it can be positive exposure for the library and the librarian.
