Now in itís 11th season, ABC has found great success in Dancing With the Stars. The show is fun and entertaining for viewers to watch their favorite singers, actors and athletes Tango, Waltz and Cha-Cha-Cha around the ballroom, all with hopes of winning the mirror ball trophy.
Celebrities will soon get the opportunity to turn in their dancing shoes for ice skates in the latest DWTS spin-off, Skating With the Stars. While most DWTS contestants can learn some of the basic dance steps, figure skating adds a new element. In addition to performance skills and musicality, celebrities will also need athletic skills as they learn new moves on skates.
Skating With the Stars will follow the same format as DWTS, where each celebrity is paired up with a professional skater. They will perform live each week and be judged by a panel of experts, then viewers have the chance to call in to vote.
Weíve seen over the years with DWTS that not everyone takes naturally to the dance floor. Maybe itís the live audience and telecast being broadcast to millions, or maybe they just can't dance. You can be sure that ice skating will produce much more drama.
Given that Skating With the Stars has been a year in the planning, one could expect the casting call to be more complicated than DWTS. Finding celebrities who are willing to try ice skating would be much more difficult than those who might be able to pick up a few dance moves. Likely most participants would have some experience skating on a frozen lake at some point in their childhood.
There has been one other celebrity skating show in recent years that achieved minimal success. The Fox network debuted Skating With Celebrities several years ago with a similar format but no audience voting. It lasted only one season in the U.S. while the U.K. version continues to air.
ABC is counting on Skating With the Stars to keep the DWTS viewers happy as we enter the holiday season. Thereís a good chance that could happen since there wonít be too many other new shows beginning their first season during that time. The only thing that could hurt ratings is normal holiday hustle and bustle keeping viewers away from their television.
The initial season of Skating With the Stars is scheduled for 6 weeks. Celebrity contestants will be announced during an upcoming DWTS broadcast. The Skating With the Stars premier will follow DWTS 11th season finale.
