Over the years, reality TV has grown from infancy to adolescence now, including a wide array of perceived entertainment, from talent shows to various types of competitions.

One such competition, The Swan, first aired in 2004. It was based on the premise of an ugly duckling being transformed into a beautiful swan. The show ran 2 seasons and was slated for a third, but was subsequently cancelled amid controversy and ultimately lack of interest.

The Swan was built around plastic surgery as a way to transform ‘ugly’ women into a beautiful ‘swan’. While the original version of that show lost interest, there’s another one in the works. This time the focus is on a bride-to-be wanting plastic surgery to make her perfect for the wedding day.

Bridalplasty is leading the way for this new genre of extreme reality programming. From the creators of Flavor of Love (need we say more), Bridalplasty will feature women competing in wedding-themed activities to win their dream plastic surgery procedure. The bride will undergo the operation and reveal her new look to the groom only on their wedding day.

Imagine falling in love with that special person and making plans to get married, only to see a physically different person at the altar on your wedding day. The bride-to-be has obviously assumed that plastic surgery is needed to make her perfect. The groom-to-be now wonders if he really knows his beloved as well as he thought. Up until that point he had loved her exactly as she was. It may be drastic enough of a change that maybe the wedding doesn’t even happen because of it.

While E! Entertainment Television has never been known for its leading coverage of national and world news events, this programming begs the question – who actually watches this stuff? What does it say about modern American culture when we showcase and promote plastic surgery as an ideal to achieve perfection?

This type of extreme entertainment programming likely will cause controversy today just as it did several years ago. No matter how many viewers are outraged at the thought, there continues to be a growing segment of the population who seem to believe that plastic surgery is the only way. In order to be loved or accepted, one needs to be perfect, and in order to be perfect, one needs plastic surgery.
