Starting a Family Game Night

A family game night is a ritual that many families look forward to each week. Maybe your family has a game shelf that is collecting dust because you have not played a game in a very long time. Make an effort to play games each week as a family. It is not only a great way to spend time together, but you also enjoy your favorite games with some of your favorite people.

Choose a Night That is Best for Your Family.

Choose a night that works best for everyone. A weekend night would be a good choice since there is no worry about school or work. If a week night works best, then play for an hour so that you still have time to prepare for the next day. Have kids do any homework before playing games. Take care of as many nighttime routines as possible like doing dishes or laundry. Have your family help you get ready for game night as well.

Play Games Away From Distractions.

The television is a huge distraction. Record your favorite shows so that no one feels they are missing anything. Play the board games around the kitchen table or another room without a television set.

Serve a Quick Dinner and Simple Snacks.

Keep snacks simple. Offer chips, peanuts, popcorn, or fruit to your family. Choose snacks that take very little time to prepare. Also consider a simple dinner on game night.

Define Any House Rules Before the Game

Some board games take a long time. You may not have three hours to devote to playing a game, so you might consider imploring some house rules. Changing the winning condition makes extremely long games shorter. You do not have to avoid these epic board games, but you can control how much of family game night is devoted to them. Play with house rules to simplify the game for younger family members.

A family game night makes for a fun evening and a great time. Enjoy playing games with your family and build lasting memories. Taking a little time to prepare ensures that family game night is a stress-free, fun event for everyone.
