Collateral Damage is your typical vintage Arnold Schwarzenegger film minus the sci/fi twist. If it had not been for Sept. 11 this film would have gone virtually unnoticed.
Andrew Davis, director of The Fugitive, has chosen not to employment the new visual styles that are so prevalent in current action/adventures after such films as Matrix and Gladiator. Missing is the sleek camera movements and special effects. Instead Davis relies more on traditional film making then trick photography. The down side of this technique is that Collateral Damage has almost a dated feel. It could have been one of Arnold's films made 10 years ago.

The story is formulaic and yet there are some eerie parallels to 9/11. I found the most profound moments are when Schwarzenegger 's character deals with the intruding media after the events that catapults his life into its revenge scenario. John Leguizamo's, drug character, brings some much need spark to the film but sadly is too short lived to have much of an effect.
I have to say this is not the worst film I've ever seen in the theater but certainly not the best either. Mediocre and unsatisfying comes to mind. If you are looking to see a great action/adventure film this week I'd say skip Collateral Damage and go for Black Hawk Down even if its to see it again.
