Bubble Guppies is a new show airing on Nick Jr. I tend to be wary of new shows, being the type that prefers the old favorites- I know what they’re about, who’s in them, and it’s easy to interact with them and my toddler/ preschooler. However, after hearing the show from an adjoining room- and the giggles associated with it from my preschooler- I figured I’d better check it out.
The Bubble Guppies are underwater creatures, similar to mermaids and mermen, that are learning about life- just like human preschoolers. They all attend the same school and are in the same class. Making clever use of musical comedy, kids learn about math, literacy, science, and other subjects- from colors and shapes to doctors and the old west. Truly, the show covers a broad spectrum of topics, which the students investigate through play and other activities.
There are lots of songs and dances in the show, and it’s easy for preschoolers to find reasons to move- the songs are catchy, and the movements are easy. There is a lot of humor interspersed throughout the show as well- humor that preschoolers and parents will find funny.
So who are these Bubble Guppies? Here’s a brief synopsis of the main characters and a bit about each of them:
Molly- Molly is a natural leader and co- host of the show. She has a very friendly, bubble personality that the other characters are drawn to, and always makes sure to include the audience in the show.
Gil- Gil is a high- energy boy who co- hosts with Molly. He’s always into having fun, and will often find it- making use of any opportunity he has to have an adventure.
Deema- Deema is the drama queen of the show. She is highly dramatic, and loves to be the center of attention, whether by telling jokes to make others laugh, or singing in an operatic voice.
Oona- Oona is the gentle and loving member of the group. Always ready with a smile or encouragement, she’s the one who will notice if a friend is down and do all she can to help cheer them up.
Nonny- Nonny is very intelligent, very careful, and very calm. While he’s usually unwilling to participate in the action, he does a great job explaining it. He does, however, have a spirit of perseverance, so even when he’s unsure of his performance, he usually does all right in the end because he just keeps trying.
Goby- Goby is the imaginative member of the group. He frequently thinks of creative and unusual adventures for his friends to act out, and loves to tell stories and speak in a silly voice.
Mr. Grouper- Mr. Grouper is the guppies’ teacher. He’s friendly and funny, and nurtures the individuality and gifts of all of the guppies. Each school day ends with a super field trip and review of the episode’s topic.
Other characters include Bubble Puppy, who loves to play with all of the guppies, especially Gil, and Little Fish, who kind of act like guides to different segments of the show.
Bubble Guppies is a cute new show that is, thus far, keeping my preschooler and my toddler interested throughout the entire length of the show, which is no easy task! Needless to say, it gets a thumbs- up from me just for that! As a parent, I found the show easy to watch, and it didn’t bore me to tears- there were plenty of parts that I found amusing, and I even chuckled aloud once or twice. If you’re looking for some lighthearted fun to watch with your toddler or preschooler, check out Bubble Guppies on Nick Jr.!
