Scrub Top Sewing Instructions

This week we will begin sewing our scrub suit. I recommend that you sew by hand when making doll clothes; the seam allowances are much smaller than on larger projects and I always feel I have better control when sewing doll clothes if I sew by hand.

This top will fit American Girl, Gotz Precious Day, Madame Alexander and other full bodied 18 inch dolls.

Begin by pinning and stitching the shoulder seams with right sides together. Press the seams open. The next step is to hem the long neck edge by rolling it to the inside and use a hem stitch or blind stitch.

Pin and stitch the sleeves in place, right sides together, matching the center fold of each sleeve to the shoulder seam.

This next step is a little tricky, but not hard, so take your time. I must admit, that after all the years I wore scrubs, I never noticed which side of the front goes over the top, but I made the left side go over the right. This can go either way, so you can choose which way you want it to go. Lay the top, as it now is, flat and place the two front pieces one on top of the other. Have both right sides facing up. Line up both bottom edges and pin them together along the bottom edge. Now bring the back over the front so that the right side of the back is facing the right sides of the front pieces. Pin and stitch the sleeve and side seams together, stitching through both layers of the front at the side seams.

Turn under the sleeve bottom edges 1/4 inch, twice, and hem stitch in place. Turn under the bottom edge of the shirt 1/4 inch, twice, and hem stitch. Stitch both layers of the front together in one hem.

The top won't fit over the doll's head, so it needs to be slid onto the doll from the bottom up.
