Red wines come in many different styles and varieties.
- Fruity--These wines are not sweet. Wines such as Pinotage feature bright fruit flavors. They make great wines for drinking on its own or paired with a slightly spicy pasta dish.
- Light-Bodied--These are wines without much tanin.
Beaujolais, such as the Lachal Vielles Vignes, from France and Valpolicella from Italy. These wines offer a lighter touch and often fruity flavors that are perfect for duck or pork dishes. - Medium-Bodied--These wines have moderate tanins. The less expensive red wines from Bordeaux in France, or the Chianti region of Italy are good examples. The moderate tanins and medium-body are two reasons that Merlot is now the world's most popular red wine.
- Full-Bodied--These are wines that red wine lovers crave. Good Cabernets, Barolos, Rhone wines feature a heaviness in the mouth.
