Planters for Cacti and Succulents

When it comes to pots for cacti and succulents, terra cotta remains one of the most popular materials.

Terra cotta is by no means dull or boring. To add a different twist to your cacti and succulent collection, look for square terra cotta pots. These are quite attractive.

It also helps if you group some of your terra cotta pots together to create a pleasing garden vignette rather than scattering them about the landscape.

Terra cotta now comes in various shapes from square and rectangular to the more traditional round ones. Some have attractive decorative finishes, such as roping around the edges.

Terra cotta has long been a preferred material for growing cacti and succulents. Now, these are available in fanciful shapes and styles. The Kinsman Company sells striking ones called Face Pots. They have three different facial styles available.

Strawberry jars made from terra cotta have come a long way. In addition to the standard type, there are ones now in different shapes. A number of sizes are also available with some being much shorter or rounder than others.

Naturally, the smaller ones will have fewer pockets. Traditionally, these have been used for Sempervirens or hen-and-chicks. But, they would work great for trialing sedums or stonecrops just as well.

I like to use pot feet under strawberry planters to allow the water to drain from the bottom easily.

When it comes time to display your terra cotta pots outdoors, you have a number of space-saving options. In small gardens, consider a wall pot holder. If you have a sunny wall, this would be a delightful way to show off you favorite plants and save space at the same time. The sturdy metal frame, which is the color of rust, has space for nine pots. The frame is decorated with scrollwork and metal plant leaves.

In addition to terra cotta, the Stone Art planters are a good choice for cacti and succulents. These have the color, shape, and look of real rock. Irregularly shaped just like natural stone, these are available in two natural looking colors and four natural looking styles. They are made of special lightweight polymer-mortar material. What I particularly like about these planters is the fact they are completely weatherproof. You can leave them outdoors over the winter without worrying.
