The first third of the book, Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke, is confusing but fun. Is it a mystery? A fairy tale? Keep reading the book. The fantasy adventure story will reveal itself before the reader’s eyes.

Inkheart opens with Meggie and her father, Mo, on the run. But from whom? And why? Who is Dustfinger? Silvertongue? The questions bounce around the inside our heads as well as Meggie’s.

Meggie is a twelve-year-old girl. She has an appreciation for the written word. Give this tween girl a book, any book, and she is the happiest person in the world. She not only reads the words, Meggie tastes the words. If the words were a wine, she would roll them on her tongue. Breathe in its heady bouquet. Sniff the dust jacket like a cork.

Each chapter in Inkheart starts with a quote. The quotes are from many great books. The reader has to stop and remember the storyline and characters from each. Unfortunately, this distracts the reader from Inkheart’s own great story and characters.

The premise of the children's fantasy book is very different and intriguing. There will be no spoilers in this article. Get Cornelia Funke's Inkheart and meet a cast of well-written characters.
